¿por qué Proteger?

  • El área propuesta para construcción es un “suelo rústico especialmente protegido ecológico” según el Plan de Uso de Terrenos de Puerto Rico.
  • El bosque es parte de un humedal el cual funciona como filtro a las escorrentías que bajan de las montañas y áreas rurales altas. Con esta función, el humedal protege la vida marina y la playa para disfrute de los ciudadanos.
  • Cualquier proyecto impactará negativamente la playa, los arrecifes y su vida marina. También impactará la flora y fauna del lugar. ¡Un desastre Ecológico!
  • La parcela se identificó que es susceptible a Inundación, tsunami, marejada ciclónica, es barrera costanera y hábitat de tortugas en peligro de extinción.
  • La calle Luquillo Beach Boulevard es la única que da acceso y actualmente hay problemas graves con la congestión vehicular. Un nuevo proyecto de viviendas empeoraría la situación.
  • Los residentes actualmente ya sufren problemas con en el servicio de agua potable, energía eléctrica y recolecta de aguas negras. Añadir nuevas viviendas complicaría más la situación.
  • En el bosque se sitúa del lado opuesto de un río donde hay evidencia documentada de artefactos con valor arqueológico relacionados al yacimiento La Monserrate. Arqueólogos indican que la probabilidad de yacimientos arqueológicos en ese bosque es muy alta pero no ha sido todavía estudiada por falta de recursos.
  • El pueblo de Luquillo tiene múltiples viviendas y un sector industrial en estado de abandono. ¿Por qué destruir un área virgen para construir cuando se pudiera habilitar todas estas propiedades?
  • En todo este proceso no ha habido transparencia por parte del desarrollador y agencias gubernamentales.

WHY TO PROTECT?

  • The area proposed for construction is a “specially protected ecological rustic land” according to the Puerto Rico Land Usage Plan.
  • The forest is part of a wetland which functions as a filter for runoff that comes down from the mountains and high rural areas. With this function, the wetland protects marine life and the beach for the enjoyment of citizens.
  • Any project will negatively impact the beach, the reefs, and their marine life. It will also impact the flora and fauna of the place. An ecological disaster!
  • The plot was identified as being susceptible to flooding, tsunami, storm surge, it is a coastal barrier and habitat for turtles in danger of extinction.
  • Luquillo Beach Boulevard is the only street that provides access and there are currently serious problems with traffic congestion. A new housing project would worsen the situation.
  • Residents are currently experiencing problems with drinking water, electricity and sewage collection services. Adding new homes would further complicate the situation.
  • In the forest it is located on the opposite side of a river where there is documented evidence of artifacts with archaeological value related to the La Monserrate site. Archaeologists indicate that the probability of archaeological sites in that forest is very high but has not yet been studied due to lack of resources.
  • The town of Luquillo has multiple houses and an industrial sector in a state of abandonment. Why destroy a virgin area to build when all these properties could be enabled?
  • Throughout this process there has been no transparency on the part of the developer and government agencies.
